Military Appreciation Month - In 1999, John McCain introduced legislation that would officially declare May as Military Appreciation Month. Congress soon agreed and passed a resolution.

The purpose of designating the entire month as National Military Appreciation Month is to remind Americans of the service and sacrifices made by all members of our military, past and present. Throughout the month, military branches and units around the world are encouraged to host or participate in community events that highlight military efforts and thank civilians for their support.

What Is National Military Appreciation Month?

Loyalty Day was signed in 1958, although it was unofficially celebrated more than thirty years earlier. On this day, the President of the United States makes an official announcement recognizing our nation's heroes, and several states hold Loyalty Day celebrations.

This week is dedicated to honoring our nation's public servants at the federal, state, county and local levels.

Military spouses are often forgotten about the sacrifices they make for our country. To honor these incredible men and women, each year President Reagan designated the Friday before Mother's Day as Military Spouse Appreciation Day.

The day commemorates Germany's official surrender to the Allies in 1945, marking the end of World War II.

NMAM started as a simple idea; To rally America around our military family, to honor, remember, recognize and appreciate those who served and those who serve now, and to know the history behind them. May was chosen because it already has many separate days dedicated to recognizing the achievements of the US military.
